I am about to recount a story. I will provide no commentary. But I surely welcome yours.

I just returned from picking up my girls from school. After the customary hellos and how were your days, oldest daughter told me that today was the student of the month assembly. Each teacher picks a student from their class to be the student of the month.

Well, I am here to report that the girl who was student of the month from oldest daughter's class was given a cell phone from her parents- as a reward for her remarkable achievement. Second grade.

That will be all for today.

Talk amongst yourselves.

Can you say SPOILED?? And besides, it's not like she really had to do anything, except be good, and be chosen by her teacher. A cell phone? Really... that's so bogus. I can't believe it.

A cell phone? What's next...a car? Maybe a house by the shore? Can you say spoiled. Whatever happened to celebrating with a scoop of ice-cream or a fun dinner? Geesh!

What the WHAT?! This is quite ridiculous. She should have gotten an ice cream cone.

Horrible! Horrible! Take her for ice cream, bake her a cake, tell her how proud you are....but dont buy her a cell phone. What were they thinking? Or not thinking? Second grade?? Are you serious. I wouldnt even get my son a cell phone when he reached high school. I made him buy it with his own money. People like that really grate my nerves.

How do you pick a student of the month after only a week in school? (or have you been in longer than that?)
But, that is a secondary thought. I think said parents were looking for a justification to give their little child a status symbol. Cuz why else would a young child like that need one?
We told our kids THEY can buy a cell phone when they start driving. They really don't need one til then, because shouldn't we be keeping better track of where they are until then?

Wow...I'm not even a parent and I know better than that! Are you kidding me???

One word: Insanity.

For us, a cell phone is for the parents' sake when the kids get older--it's for a tether so WE can reach THEM when they're off doing youth stuff or extra curricular. And they can reach us in an emergency.

And there are strict rules: it's NOT for calling friends or texting, and it's most certainly not for when they're in grade school.

A student of the month reward around here would be, "Way to go! Here's an extra chocolate chip cookie!" (Or if I'm REALLY generous, a McDonald's ice cream cone.)

I think a Happy Meal would have sufficed. Maybe even some stickers. But cell phones? Really? This is exactly why so many kids grow up with a sense of entitlement and then when the real world happens they can't hack it and they turn to drugs. That was hyperbole. Maybe.

That poor girl. I am finding more and more that simplicity is best.

that is really sad. with their daughter only in second grade is that the smallest reward they could give? have they made everything in her life so big already that there was nothing simpler that they could offer? i feel for the parents for thinking that was an appropriate rewaRd. and i feel for the daughter that her parents have already spoiled her that much in her short life. so sad...

Those parents need some guidance!!! Poor child!

Glad I don't have to provide her a reward when she's 12 or 16, or 18. Good luck to them.

All I have to say is that I hope no one is THAT critical of my parenting skills. We all parent to the best of our ability, and whether or not we agree with other people's choices, it is best to keep it to ourselves, and hope that others will be as understanding when we make silly choices as parents.

this is nuts! My oldest daughter is in 2nd grade and is still throwing fits and wanting someone to accompany her to the bathroom! Cel phones should be for middle school kids and only then on a family-only/strict basis. Urghhhh!

Considering I didn't get one for myself until I was 24, I think my daughter is going to have to wait a little longer than 2nd grade.

P.S. I also didn't get those motorized toy cars when I was little ... but I'm not bitter.

Well, maybe a little.
